Referral Gifts · Costa Mesa, CA

Referral gifts for the people
who send you business.

A referral is the only lead that arrives with someone else's reputation attached to it. The thank-you has about a week to land while the introduction is still warm — and in real estate, mortgage, insurance and securities it has to land under a value cap somebody else set.

Boxes from $79, hand-packed in Costa Mesa and sent one at a time. Decide the box once; send the name when the referral lands.

Thanking someone for something else?

This page is the introduction — the person who put your name in front of a buyer. Thanking a client for their own business runs from client appreciation gifts, a closed home from realtor closing gifts, and a senior recipient from executive gifts. Most firms run all of them off one brief and one invoice.

Why they are harder than they look

The four reasons referral gifts never get sent

A referral does not arrive on a calendar. It lands on a Tuesday, and the window in which a thank-you still reads as a thank-you is about a week.

Non-branded boxes are packed within 72 hours and ship tracked ground, arriving 1–5 business days after packing. Send the name and address the day the introduction lands and the box reaches them inside that window.

They come one at a time, so nobody ever buys them. Choosing a gift for one person is a twenty-minute errand, and the twentieth time it does not happen.

Decide the box once, not twenty times. Pick the band, give us the list as names come in, and the only per-referral decision left is what the card says.

In real estate, mortgage, insurance and securities the question is not what is tasteful. It is what the recipient is allowed to accept, and the answer is a number in someone else's rule book.

Tell us the ceiling you have been given and we will point at the boxes that sit under it. Every invoice shows the per-box value, so the gift can be filed rather than explained.

The card turns the gift into an ask. "Thanks — keep them coming" is the sentence that makes a referral partner stop referring, and it is the one most gift programs print.

We never put "please refer us" language on your card. The card thanks the person for the introduction by name, and the next referral is left to the work that earned the first one.

Before you send

Whose rule book decides the value

A referral gift is the one gift where the recipient's profession, not your budget, sets the ceiling. These are the four rule books that come up most often in the quotes we write.

Real estate, mortgage, title and escrow

RESPA Section 8 restricts giving anything of value in exchange for the referral of settlement-service business. A thank-you to a past client whose transaction has closed is an ordinary courtesy; a gift to the agent, lender or title rep who sent you the file is the arrangement the rule is about. Your brokerage or compliance officer sets the line, and we never print referral-seeking language on the card.

Securities, banking and insurance

FINRA's gifts rule caps what a registered person may give or receive per person per year, and most states cap what an insurance producer may give under anti-rebating law. The figure belongs to the rule, not to you — so the per-box value is the thing to check. Give us the ceiling and we will point at the boxes under it, with the value on the invoice.

Law, accounting and consulting

State bar and professional-conduct rules govern fee-sharing and referral arrangements, and a modest gift after the fact usually sits outside them — but the firm's own policy is often stricter than the rule, and partners tend to know their policy. Ask before the first send rather than after an awkward email.

Anyone employed by a government body

Public employees, procurement officers and foreign officials are not gift recipients. US bribery and anti-corruption statutes make that a legal question rather than a question of taste, and no box is worth the answer. We will tell you the same thing if you ask us to send one.

We are a gift company, not your compliance department: this is general information, not legal advice, and the person who signs off on the cap is your compliance officer, broker or counsel. What we can do is build to the number they give you and show the per-box value on the invoice. How to find out what your recipient can accept.

How the buying works

Two ways to send one box the week it is earned

Gifts arrive one at a time. The purchase is what happens up front, and which of these fits depends on how many referrals a year you are thanking.

Reserve the year

Annual Corporate Gifting Program

Reserve from 50 gifts for the year. We prepare and store them in Costa Mesa and release each one as a referral lands, with 7 days' notice. From 100 gifts a year, every gift is 15% below its regular per-gift price.

This is the route for a firm whose pipeline is mostly referred: the boxes are bought before the year starts, so a Tuesday introduction needs an email, not a purchase order.

Batch the quarter

One order, released as names arrive

Orders start at 12 boxes, so a smaller practice buys the quarter's referrals in one order and tells us where each box goes as the introductions happen, rather than placing an order per thank-you.

Custom boxes built to your brief, or anything carrying your logo, start at 50 boxes and add production time before packing.

Non-branded boxes are packed within 72 hours and normally ship tracked ground, arriving 1–5 business days after packing — which is what keeps a referral gift inside the week it was earned.

Questions

Referral gifts, answered

What is a good referral thank you gift?

Something the person would open at home rather than leave on a desk, with a card that names the introduction they made. Our referral edit of the Signature Collection runs in three bands — Sweet & Savory Flight (from $79), Backyard Smoke (from $89), The Grazing Table (from $109) — each hand-packed in Costa Mesa, CA, ground shipping included. Food and tabletop boxes travel best here: they get used, they get shared, and they do not sit in a drawer like branded merchandise. Contents follow the current curation, with any substitution of equal or greater value confirmed before fulfillment.

How much should you spend on a referral gift?

Most referral gifts we send land in the $79–$109 band per box, ground shipping included — the deal usually sets the ceiling, and a gift that reads as a percentage of the commission reads as a payment. Two figures narrow it faster than taste does: whatever cap your recipient's own industry or employer sets, and the IRS business-gift deduction limit of $25 per recipient per year (Publication 463), which applies to the box and its contents regardless of what you spend.

Can I send one box each time a referral comes in?

Gifts go out one at a time; the purchase is what happens up front. A one-time order starts at 12 boxes, so the two honest routes are these. Reserve a year through the Annual Corporate Gifting Program — from 50 gifts, held in Costa Mesa and released one at a time with 7 days' notice, and from 100 gifts a year every gift is 15% below its regular per-gift price. Or batch: order 12 boxes for the quarter's referrals and tell us where each one goes as the names arrive.

Is it legal to give someone a gift for a referral?

It depends entirely on what the recipient does for a living, and in four industries the limit is set by regulation rather than by etiquette. Anything of value exchanged for the referral of settlement-service business — real estate, mortgage, title, escrow — is what RESPA Section 8 restricts. A registered representative works under FINRA's gifts rule, which caps what they may give or receive per person per year. Most states cap what an insurance producer may give under anti-rebating law. Public employees and government officials, US or foreign, are not gift recipients at all. Ask the recipient's compliance desk for their number before you send, not after.

Should the card ask for more referrals?

No, and we will not print it. A thank-you that carries a request is an invoice with a ribbon on it: the recipient reads the ask, not the thanks, and the next introduction gets made to someone else. Name the specific introduction, thank them for it, and stop. If you want the gift to carry your firm's identity, light co-branding on the card or ribbon is the usual choice — the box itself arrives clean.

How fast can a referral gift go out?

Standard non-branded orders are prepared in 72 hours. Custom branding adds production time, confirmed in your quote before you approve anything.

How are the boxes delivered?

Southern California orders of 50 boxes or more are hand-delivered by our team at no delivery charge, on the day preparation completes. Anything outside Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties ships tracked ground, and so do smaller orders as a rule — though a small local order on a tight date can often go the same day, hand-delivered free, confirmed in writing first.

Can we put our logo on a referral box?

The default is no logo at all: the box reads as a gift rather than as marketing, which is the whole point of a referral thank-you. Custom and logo-branded boxes start at 50 boxes. Branded production also adds lead time, confirmed in your quote before you approve anything — which is why the fast, unbranded box is the one we recommend for referrals and the branded one for a planned seasonal send.

Are referral gifts tax deductible?

The IRS caps the business-gift deduction at $25 per recipient per year (Publication 463), and the box and its contents count toward that cap; only incidental costs that add no substantial value — engraving, gift wrap, postage — sit outside it. We show the line items on every invoice so your accountant can apply the right treatment. A referral gift is also not a referral fee, and the two are reported differently. The cap, what sits outside it, and the two mistakes people make with it: Corporate gifting and the IRS $25 rule, explained.

This is general information, not tax advice — confirm the treatment of any gifting spend with your accountant.
